A ship called Tomorrow

She knew the voice before she understood it. Everybody does. It is the voice you hear when you read silently, the one that has never once surprised you until now.

“Tell the keeper,” said the voice, “that the manifest is wrong. Tell him the ninth name is mine.”

The lamp guttered. Somewhere above them a gull landed on the roof and walked its short, deliberate patrol from one gutter to the other.

She put the lid back on and pressed the wax flat with her palm, as though that could undo anything, and went to stand very still by the door until her hands stopped shaking.

In the morning the jar was on the keeper's desk, and the ledger was open to a page she had never seen, and her name was written on it in a hand that was not his.

The archive smelled of wet stone and lamp oil, the way it always did after a storm, and the jars on the lowest shelves had sweated a ring of salt onto the wood.

She counted them twice. Four hundred and twelve jars on the north wall, one for every ship the city had lost since the harbour was dredged. She knew the number the way other people knew their own birthdays.

“You're early,” said the keeper, without turning round. He was writing in the ledger with a pen so old the nib had worn into the shape of his hand.

Outside, the tide was going out with the long sigh it made on still nights, dragging pebbles down the slipway one by one.

There are rules in an archive, and the first rule is that you do not open a jar unless the city asks you to. The second rule is that nobody remembers the city ever asking.

The wax gave under her thumbnail like the skin of an apple. She told herself she was only checking the seal.

For a moment there was nothing but the faint, impossible sound of surf inside a jar the size of her fist. Then someone inside it said her name.

She knew the voice before she understood it. Everybody does. It is the voice you hear when you read silently, the one that has never once surprised you until now.
